I first met Tracey when she competed at the North Island Championships, an annual competition that was organized by Olympic Weightlifting New Zealand. From then, I've seen her compete in multiple Crossfit competitions that I would cover, most notably, the Wellington Cup.
She's recently made it to the Crossfit Regional Games along with our group of fantastic Kiwi Athletes. Before she left to compete in Australia, I caught up with her and documented one of her grueling workout regimes.
Tracey trains at a few different gyms throughout the week and one of them is Crossfit East Tamaki. I'm glad we chose this box as I've always wanted to see what this box looked like. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. As soon as I stepped into the gym, I fell in love with the vibe and feel of the setup. It looked rustic with the cast iron bars, weights and DIY shelves and benches. One would think that this place was a filming set for the movie Rocky.
It was a perfectly lazy Sunday afternoon with lots of rain and most people would've enjoyed a day indoors. But not Tracey. She was at the gym working out with some friends in an almost empty gym.
After spending some time stretching and warming up, they started on their multiple workouts. It was a rather long and tiring session but that did not phase them. In fact, they looked to be having a good time, enjoying a few jokes and laughter in between.
One of the most technically demanding movements that Tracey did during her workout was the Ring Muscle Up. It is quite an intimidating gymnastic movement but I was amazed at how easy she made it look. Tracey later told me that she didn't feel like doing any muscle ups today and had some dread doing them, but they had to be done.
I guess that's where the elite stands out. Even when you don't feel like doing something, even when it's raining and most people would be resting, even when it's a Sunday, you do it because it has to be done.
